Title: Kenny

Author: Tori Deathangel

a wee bit angst driven, you've been warned

usual disclaimers, blah blah, not mine someone other then me owns
firefly, however Kenny is mine.

It was a hard night, something of which he'll know he'd experience
again and again. Those faces of the ones he killed today will haunt
him, with one in particular. A young boy barely 17 and he killed
him. Not out of cold blood mind you. No, it's kill or be killed in
these parts.

The one thing that haunted him about this kid, reminded him of the
time he was running along with Kenny. They gone messing around at
ole man nelson's and he caught them with his daughter. He grabbed
his gun and started pegging away at them. Most times he was a lousy
shot. Jayne looked behind him as they were running Kenny way no more
then 2 feet behind him laughing as well, when his expression
changed, to shocked and then finally to glazed look, crumbling to
the ground.

Jayne stopped in shock, fear racing through him as he saw a crimson
river pool around his friend. He ran back towards Kenny hoping like
all hell that the wound received was just a flesh wound and that
nothing serious would happen to his one and only friend. He pulled
Kenny upwards from the grass, eyes propped open and fixed towards
the sky.

He closed his eyes remembering the events so clearly, it was so hard
to be close to anyone after that, again. He dove into his pack and
retrieved a momento that Kenny had made for him when they were kids.
It was a little wooden car, a car that Kenny widdled with his own to
hands when he found that Jayne's family couldn't afford to buy any
toys for their kids. It wasn't the best looking thing in the `verse,
but to him it was better then any amount of cash could ever bring
him. He turned it over and read the inscription…

~ Jayne best friends forever Kenny

Hell he even given him the knife he used to make it, a knife that
was also hidden away from prying eyes. Some things are best kept in
the past, but someday and maybe someday soon he may trust enough
again to make friends.
